The use of asbestos materials within residential and commercial properties was finally banned in1999. Asbestos was used primarily for its fire retardant properties and has been used in its raw state for insulation e.g. pipe insulation or added to other building materials such as boarding and panelling. Small quantities of asbestos was also added to numerous other materials such as textured coatings (artex), floor tiles, roof tiles and corrugated cement sheeting.
Whilst most asbestos materials do not pose a risk if left undisturbed it is important that there presence is known to help prevent accidental damage occurring.
